How Twitter reacted to reports linking Everton with Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke

In the crazy world of the transfer window, it seems that Everton could be set to make yet another signing as they splash the cash in order to replace Romelu Lukaku. Sky Sports now claim that Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke could be the latest player to move to Goodison Park with the Toffees said to be interested in the Belgian.

After scoring 15 goals for Crystal Palace last season, as Sam Allardyce narrowly saved the club from relegation, it is easy to understand why the Eagles are reluctant to allow their star striker to leave the club. Towards the end of the season, his work alongside the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon was threatening even the strongest of Premier League defences.

For Ronald Koeman and co., it’s also clear to see why there may be an interest. Clearly looking to replace Lukaku, they have turned to his international team-mate as a potential alternative given his fairly similar physical style and bulldozing power when facing up to defenders.

However, if these reports are accurate it could still be a surprising move. Benteke had a hugely disappointing spell at Everton’s arch rivals Liverpool in his only season at a top half club, and whilst he has impressed for Aston Villa and Crystal Palace he has struggled to replicate that form under pressure.

Having cost Palace £27 million up front with the potential to rise to £32 million only last summer, the powerful centre-forward would not come cheap.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the news…

His Liverpool past certainly wouldn’t help him…

And Reds fans watched on in amusement…

But Palace fans were beginning to panic…
