Liverpool have completed their second signing of the summer as winger Mohamed Salah has joined from AS Roma. The fee is believed to be around £34 million (€39m), according to BBC Sport. It falls just short of breaking the club’s all-time transfer record at the current exchange rates. The Egyptian international has been one of the Reds’ priority targets this summer as Jurgen Klopp prepares his squad for a return to the Champions League.
Salah came close to joining Liverpool from Basle in 2014, but he ended up moving to Chelsea. Although he showed flashes of his ability at Stamford Bridge, he was only given six Premier League starts and it became clear that he wouldn’t be a key man with the Blues. Loan spells to Fiorentina and Roma followed before he made his move to the latter permanent last summer. The fee was £15 million, which means that the Serie A club are making a healthy profit on the player.
Last season, he was one of the stars of Serie A, as he contributed 15 goals and 11 assists in 31 appearances. He finished the season with a goal involvement every 95.7 minutes, which is very impressive. It is clear why Liverpool have targeted him and he will be hungry to show what he can do in England following a disappointing spell with Chelsea.
It is a curious transfer as Liverpool already have several good attacking options. Klopp could be choosing to line up with a more fluid formation next season, with Salah and Sadio Mane leading the line; Roberto Firmino in the number ten role; and Philippe Coutinho, Gini Wijnaldum and Emre Can playing as a midfield three. This is only one option for Klopp, but it is an exciting one and it would be difficult for opposing defences to deal with.

Despite their success last season, the one problem that Liverpool faced was the limited options in their squad. They had a core of 14/15 players and injuries hit them hard. Mane, Coutinho and Jordan Henderson missed long periods of the season, which Klopp struggled to deal with as the strength in depth wasn’t there. With the Champions League to contend with this coming season, it was important that his squad became deeper and this move certainly provides him with a number of options.
