Liverpool have apologised to Southampton over their attempts to sign Virgil van Dijk in recent weeks.
The South Coast side had threatened to report the Reds to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach for the Dutchman.
It was clear that the defender was a priority target for Jurgen Klopp and it was thought that the player was interested in a move to Anfield. However, the interest has now ended and the 25-year-old won’t be playing for the Reds next season.
“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk,” read an official club statement.
“We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”
The Telegraph had reported earlier this week that the Dutchman was set to become the most expensive defender in the world after he had decided he wanted a move to join the Reds. Southampton had been keen to keep the defender, but it was clear that his head had been turned and the revelations today suggest that something untoward had taken place.
This has been a developing story with new information being discovered by the media on a day-to-day basis. On Tuesday, the Daily Echo reported that Southampton had asked the Premier League to investigate Liverpool’s conduct during the proposed transfer.
The suspicion came as a result of a host of articles being published by Liverpool connected journalists featuring the line that Klopp had played an important part in convincing the defender to choose the Reds.
There will be more information released over the coming days and it will be interesting to see where Liverpool turn next. Selling clubs will pay close attention to their conduct, as will the Premier League as this saga has reflected very poorly on them.
For Van Dijk, he will still be a player that several clubs will be interested in and another team may benefit from the Reds dropping out of the race.
