How Twitter reacted to Diego Costa’s Chelsea bust-up amid China interest

The biggest story of the week was broken today (Friday) as it was reported that Diego Costa won’t be traveling to face Leicester City after a blazing row with Antonio Conte. There are two reasons that are being attributed to this. Firstly, the Daily Mail report that it was about the striker’s fitness, with Costa complaining about he is suffering with a back problem, but the medical staff aren’t convinced. Meanwhile, it is being widely reported that Costa has had his head turned by interest from China after receiving a mammoth offer rumoured to be worth £30 million per year.

It appears that the China interest has caused Costa to complain about an injury problem, which Conte recognises and there has now been a huge bust up between the two. It was always expected that Conte would have problems with the Spanish international, as both possess fiery personalities. They have got along well until now, but this argument has the potential to ruin Chelsea’s season. Costa is their most important player and it will be difficult to replace him if he does indeed leave. Also the mentality around the club will change as Conte’s authority has been undermined.

Although Costa appears to be acting out in order to force a move away, it is difficult to be too critical of him as he is being offered a ludicrous amount of money. A footballer’s career is short and he is being offered an opportunity to secure his financial future. As human beings, we have to recognise that it is only natural to be tempted by these sums of money. We also don’t know completely what has gone on behind the scenes.

Chelsea will want to keep Diego Costa until at least the end of the season and it will be interesting to see if such an agreement can be found. If not, the Blues’ title challenge will take a severe hit and many will not see them as favourites any more. The increasing influence of China and their finances is a problem for the sport, as it is beginning to damage the biggest leagues in the world. If a world class player such as Costa made the move to China, it would be a ground-breaking development and underline the threat that the Chinese Super League poses. It is too soon to overreact to this news, but it is an issue that Chelsea need to sort and quickly.
