It took Southampton just 69 seconds to give Mauricio Pochettino a nightmare start on his second return to his former stomping ground, with Virgil Van Dijk heading in from a matter of yards to give the Saints the lead.
It was a slow start for Tottenham, but they grew into the game as it went on and a deflected cross allowed Dele Alli to beat Van Dijk to loop a header over Fraser Forster in the Southampton goal.
Harry Kane scored a fine headed effort himself just after the break, and despite skying a penalty, he could take pride from that finish which gave his side a vital lead.
Substitute Son Heung Min then added a third with just five minutes left on the clock and midfielder Dele Alli rounded off his man of the match display with a well taken second goal for himself and a fourth for his team.
