Southampton put in an exceptional counter-attacking performance on Wednesday night as they beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield to secure their place in the final of the EFL Cup.
Claude Puel’s side, who had a one-goal advantage from the first-leg at St Mary’s Stadium, came out all guns blazing in the first half and were unlucky not to increase their aggregate lead after Dusan Tadic and Steve Davis wasted two clear chances.
Jurgen Klopp’s half-time team talk clearly had an effect as Liverpool came out a different side after the break, but other than an incredible recovery stop from Fraser Forster they failed to carve out any meaningful opportunities despite their dominance.
Shane Long then sealed Southampton’s spot in the final after finishing off a flowing counter-attack in the dying seconds of the game, sending the away support into raptures.
