Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been named as one of the candidates to replace Gareth Southgate, if the England manager stands down after UEFA Euro 2024.

The 53-year-old’s contract expires in December, and it remains a mystery as to whether he will continue working until then, sign a new contract or simply walk away from the Three Lions immediately.

Amid the uncertainty, Eddie Howe‘s thoughts on leaving Newcastle for England have emerged…

What Eddie Howe thinks of England job and replacing Gareth Southgate

A story from iNews now claims that the 46-year-old does hold a long-term ambition of managing England, although an exit from St James’ Park is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

It is said that Howe desperately wants to end Newcastle’s wait for a major trophy – which has been ongoing since 1955 – while the man from Amersham also wants to prove himself in the UEFA Champions League before thinking about international football.

The story also mentions that international football has lost a bit of prestige in recent times, with the quality of games on show at UEFA Euro 2024 far from comparable to the pace of the Premier League, another thing playing on the Newcastle manager’s mind.

In terms of Newcastle themselves, iNews claim that the Magpies would reject any approach from the Football Association (FA) to speak with Howe.

Newcastle fans should not worry

Howe has done a solid job at Newcastle since replacing Steve Bruce in November 2021 – securing 4th and 7th place in his two seasons so far, while also reaching the Carabao Cup final.

However, he seems incredibly focused on achieving more with the Magpies, so we would be very surprised if he walked away to manage England.

Gary Neville even asked Howe about managing England on The Overlap, to which he earnestly replied: “I have never really thought about international football, for me personally. Who knows what will happen in the future.”

That seemed highly genuine, as Howe focuses intensely on his work at Newcastle.

Therefore, even if the FA offer him the reins, it would come as a huge shock to us if Howe agreed to leave Newcastle for England at this stage of his career.
