How much Tottenham have received from UEFA after Super Cup defeat against PSG

Tottenham took part in the UEFA Super Cup for the first time ever on Wednesday night inside the Stadio Friuli in Udine.

The winners of the UEFA Europa League met PSG – holders of the UEFA Champions League – for a shot at the rare trophy, and looked set for an impressive win thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

2-0 quickly became 2-2, however, as Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos scored in the 85th and 94th minute respectively, leaving the game to be decided by penalties.

Tottenham ended up losing the Super Cup as Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed, although the prize money for simply being involved in the Super Cup will soften the blow for Daniel Levy regardless.

Tottenham bank £3.4m after Super Cup loss

UEFA handed both Tottenham and PSG a sum of £3.4m just for taking part in the Super Cup.

An additional £900,000 prize – less than Chelsea earned for a single FIFA Club World Cup win – is then set aside for the winners, so PSG will take £4.3m back to the Parc des Princes.

Thomas Frank could have become just one of four Premier League managers to win a trophy in their first competitive game for a new club, after Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and David Moyes.

Nevertheless, ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League opener with Burnley on Saturday, putting up a strong fight against PSG – who had never previously played Spurs in a competitive fixture – is a decent way to prepare.

Tottenham can put Super Cup cash towards Savinho or Eberechi Eze deal

£3.4m admittedly might not be much in the grand scheme of things for a Premier League side, but it is a welcome cash injection as Spurs attempt to sign new players.

TBR Football understand Tottenham are locked in talks with Manchester City over a deal for Savinho – and have also reignited their interest in Crystal Palace No.10 Eberechi Eze.

The latter had a £68m release clause in his contract, so the £3.4m prize money will do little to nudge a sale any closer.

However, it could be helpful when it comes to tempting targets with an attractive signing on fee during talks over personal terms, if Tottenham reach that stage with either the Brazil international or the England international.
