Manchester United and Tottenham were both in European action on Thursday night.

The Red Devils welcomed Lyon to Old Trafford after a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the quarter-final in France, a game which led Ruben Amorim to drop Andre Onana as a result of his mistakes for both goals.

In regards to Spurs, the north Londoners took on Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany after a 1-1 draw in N17 last week, with Ange Postecoglou under huge pressure to deliver.

TBR Football understand Tottenham have even approached Oliver Glasner – who actually led Eintracht Frankfurt to UEFA Europa League glory in 2022 – as Daniel Levy seriously considers making a change.

Fortunately, both of the Premier League duo managed to progress into the last four.

A Dominic Solanke penalty put Tottenham through, while a thriller took place at Old Trafford as goals from Manuel Ugarte, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire knocked Lyon out by a 5-4 scoreline on the night, 7-6 on aggregate.

With that, some prize money is heading the way of Manchester United and Tottenham.

Manchester United and Tottenham bank millions

As UEFA revealed in an official document, semi-finalists receive £3.54m in prize money.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham will, at the very least, finish the season as UEFA Europa League semi-finalists, so that sum has been secured, and the English duo can add it to what they’ve collected earlier in the competition.

Manchester United finished third in the league phase, winning five and drawing three of their eight games, so the Red Devils banked £2.28m before the knockout stage began, with Round of 16 and quarter-final qualification adding a further £1.47m and £2.11m respectively in prize money.

UEFA also handed clubs who qualified for the competition €4.31m (£3.7m) before a ball had been kicked in the league phase – meaning Manchester United have banked a total of £13.1m so far.

In Tottenham’s case, the exact same applies, minus £126,400 – as Spurs lost one game in the league phase instead of securing a draw like Manchester United did.

Therefore, the north Londoners have banked £12.97m in UEFA Europa League prize money so far.

What about the UEFA Champions League?

Both Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Levy will be desperate to win this competition and secure UEFA Champions League qualification, as the prize money in that competition is significantly higher.

Arsenal have earned £59.6m from UEFA so far this season after knocking Real Madrid out on Wednesday to progress into the semi-final.

Furthermore, even though PSG knocked them out at the quarter-final stage on Tuesday, Aston Villa made £45.19m from the competition, so it certainly pays to be involved in the UEFA Champions League.
