How much a Premier League referee makes per game

Many people have been asking Google how much money a Premier League referee makes per game.

Officials in England are a trending topic right now amidst the news that David Coote has been sacked by the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) – after derogatory comments about Jurgen Klopp and other videos surfaced online.

Premier League referees are often at the forefront of the action every week as controversial decisions are made – but just how much money do they get to handle this huge responsibility? Let’s take a look.

The varying wages of a Premier League referee

A story from The Athletic back in April shared the typical salary of a Premier League official.

It is believed that officials earn between £73,191, £105,257 and £147,258 annually depending on their level of experience and rank within the PGMOL.

Premier League officials are typically paid £1,116 per game – although those working as the video assistant referee over at Stockley Park receive £837 per game.

While some will argue this seems too high given how regularly mistakes are made across the Premier League, the figures are surprisingly low in our eyes.

Not that we are arguing the officials deserve more, but when a common salary for a Premier League player is around £30,000-a-week, and there are billions of pounds involved in the Premier League, some may have expected referees to earn much more.

How much money referees earn in other European leagues

If you are an aspiring referee, get yourself over to La Liga if possible.

The Athletic add that referees in Spain’s top-flight earn a fixed annual salary of £124,256, and receive an additional £4,205 match fee, with the VAR official making £2,102.

Not only that, but officials in Spain also receive £21,929-a-year for image rights, related to wearing advertisements on their kits.

Elsewhere, Bundesliga officials earn a maximum annual salary of £70,067 and a minimum annual salary of £52,977.

Additionally, those in Ligue 1 make £66,716-a-year at the lowest, and £67,058-a-year at the highest.

Last but not least, officials in Italy’s Serie A can make up to £77,345 every year, with £76,954 being the lowest annual salary.
