Martin Zubimendi has been at the centre of so many transfer stories in recent months it’s almost hard to keep count.
Liverpool tried to sign the midifelder in the summer, and Zubimendi remains a target for the Reds.
Arsenal have been linked with Zubimendi, as Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the player, while Manchester City have reportedly looked at Zubimendi as they try to find cover for the injury-stricken Rodri.
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, David Ornstein has been discussing Zubimendi’s situation, and he says that the midfielder is now more ready than ever to leave Real Sociedad after remaining loyal for so many years.

Ornstein shared what he knows about Zubimendi and his stance on his future.

“This is a player who came close to joining Liverpool last summer. Not for the first time, he decided to stay with Real Sociedad. Arsenal have tried previously,” Ornstein said.
Real Madrid, I think, have been linked and others. Some people think that his loyalty to La Real will continue to keep him forever, but increasingly in the chats I’ve had, there is an expectation now that the summer, he is more ready in his head to move than before they’ve had more time to plan,’ Ornstein said.
“Things are changing a little bit there. Mikel Moreno has moved. And instead of maybe being the second or third out the door, which would have been a problem in the past for Sociedad, he may be the first on this occasion, if everybody’s got their head round it, and that would be one for the summer.”
Which club should Martin Zubimendi join?
Zubimendi has a number of options open to him right now within the Premier League.
Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City have all expressed an interest in Zubimendi, and all three teams have very different midfield make-ups right now.
| Arsenal deep midfield options | Manchester City deep midfield options | Liverpool deep midfield options |
| Declan Rice | Rodri | Ryan Gravenberch |
| Jorginho | Mateo Kovacic | Alexis Mac Allister |
| Thomas Partey | John Stones* | Curtis Jones |
| Mikel Merino | Rico Lewis* | Wataru Endo |
| Ilkay Gundogan | Dominik Szoboszlai | |
| Matheus Nunes |
Arsenal have the most midfield options, and after signing Declan Rice and Mikel Merino over the past 18 months, there’s an argument to make that the Gunners don’t necessarily need Zubimendi at this point.
Zubimendi would, eventually, end up being second-choice at Manchester City behind Rodri once he returns from injury, so perhaps a move to the Etihad wouldn’t be a good idea either.
Ryan Gravenberch is thriving for Liverpool in that deeper midfield role at the moment, but that is not his natural position, nor is it a natural role for Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones or Domink Szoboszlai.
For that reason, a move to Liverpool may be most logical for Zubimendi as there is a clear gap in Arne Slot’s team that Zubimendi would easily slot into.
Where Zubimendi ends up remains to be seen, but a move to Liverpool may be the most logical for the Spaniard next year.
