Antonio Valencia – 7
The former Wigan man worked hard defensively and also looked to get his side down the wing when possible, even if those moments were rare. Never stopped running and it would be very harsh to criticise his performance.
Ander Herrera – 4
Foolishly sent off for diving in on Eden Hazard only seconds after referee Michael Oliver warned Phil Jones and captain Chris Smalling, Herrera’s role was little more than a midfield enforcer and he was shown up by Hazard’s movement and skill.
Paul Pogba – 5
Lazy to close down N’Golo Kante having left him in acres of space and constantly committing unnecessary fouls, Pogba would have struggled to justify a fee of £8.9 million let alone £89 million with his performance. Forced to be more defensive minded than usual, his discomfort showed.
Matteo Darmian – 6
Sloppy in the first half and not much better in the second, Darmian contributed little of note and was more than happy to sit deep and defend rather than look to get forward down the flank as Valencia did at times.
