How Manchester United’s players rated in their late show against Stoke

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Uncharacteristically sloppy performance from the United midfielder today, guilty of a heavy touch at times and unable to find his normally fluid passing range. Wasted a glorious opportunity before half-time, and was put out of his misery by being replaced by Lingard. Still seems to be adjusting to the Premier League, but his form will come. 5.

Juan Mata – Just wasn’t the Spaniard’s day. Unfortunate to see Pieters’ cross ricochet off his leg and past De Gea and should have redeemed himself with a first-half equaliser but he blazed over from two yards out. Worked hard but for little reward. 6.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Had the beating of Martins Indi and Shawcross throughout the 90 minutes, using his physicality well in the opposition box, but for once failed to find the end product. Looked short on confidence for some reason, always looking for a pass rather than shooting when in and around the 18-yard-box. 6.

Marcus Rashford – Increased the tempo once he came on as United looked for a way back into the match, showcasing his usual darting runs and bursts of pace. Kept Stoke’s defence twisting one way then another as he searched for an equaliser, and he nearly did with a curling effort – Mourinho will surely think what could have been if the 19-year-old had started. 7.

Wayne Rooney – Looked off the pace again in comparison to United’s other attacking options but he won’t care one bit when he can produce moments of magic like he did. Spared his side’s blushes and rolled back the years with an astonishing late free-kick, and deservedly became United’s outright record goal-scorer. Will go down as a club legend, no doubt about it. 8.

Jesse Lingard – Worked superbly on the right-hand side after his introduction, with him and Rashford adding much-needed pace to United’s attacks. Hit the crossbar with a sharp drive as he had an impressive cameo. Has been pushed down the pecking order over the past few weeks, but will have given Mourinho something to think about. 7.
