Marouane Fellaini – Perhaps a surprising addition to Mourinho’s line-up in the holding role in place of the imperious Carrick, but he acquitted himself well and covered a lot of ground. Found himself in space on numerous occasions during the first-half, forcing Grant into two saves, but will never have the composed impact on United’s play that Carrick has. 6.
Paul Pogba – Came back from last week’s disappointment with a much-improved performance, dictating midfield play with his passing variations and being involved in most of United’s attacking play. Will still be wondering how Grant kept out his fierce half-volley, but it summed up a frustrating afternoon in front of goal for the French international. 7.
Ander Herrera – Despite Fellaini coming in for Carrick, it was Herrera who sat in the holding role for most of the match. Kept things ticking over in the midfield as United pushed for an equaliser, and nullified any attempts Stoke made to venture into the other half of the pitch. 7.
