How Manchester United's players rated in their 3-1 victory over Swansea
Manchester United returned to winning ways with a comprehensive 3-1 Premier League victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils all-but confirmed they would be travelling home with three points in the first period, courtesy of goals from Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with the Swedish international scoring twice before the break following his team-mate’s brilliantly executed volley.
Throughout a quiet second period, the visitors dominated, but did find themselves pegged back, when Swans defender Mike van der Hoorn scored following an in-direct free-kick, with a close range header.
Here is how the Manchester United players rated, having earned a much-need three points…
David de Gea – 6
During a very quiet afternoon, little fell in the direction of the Spanish goalkeeper. Ultimately, he will be disappointed with his back-line for failing to ensure a clean sheet.
Matteo Darmian – 6
The Italy international gave a good display at right-back, as he looks to kick-start his United career under Jose Mourinho. He got forward well and carried out his defensive duties whenever called upon.
Phil Jones – 5
Jones could be considered at fault for his side conceding. Failing to pick up Swansea’s Mike van der Hoorn from an indirect free-kick, the Dutchman had all the time in the world to head into the back of the Manchester United net. His first start for some time will hardly have convinced Jose Mourinho that he is worth a regular starting spot.
Marcos Rojo – 6
The Argentine international weighed in with an assured performance as centre-back, with very little phasing him throughout ninety minutes. Having said that, he is unlikely to experience an easier match all season.
Ashley Young – 6
A solid performance throughout, although Swansea posed very little threat out wide.
Marouane Fellaini – 6
The Belgian did well to squash the advances of a usually tricky Swansea midfield. His dominance saw him win three aerial duels, while finding success in 92.7% of his attempted passes – an impressive completion rate, that you wouldn’t commonly associate with the Manchester United midfielder.
Michael Carrick – 7
Calm and composed, as ever, the English midfielder appears the perfect player for getting the best of Paul Pogba. Carrick’s ability to complete the simple tasks, with ease, makes the game a walk in the park for his surrounding team-mates.
Wayne Rooney – 7
An improved performance from the Manchester United captain, who chipped in with two assists. He was replaced by Morgan Schneiderlin with five minutes of the match remaining.
Paul Pogba – 7
The Frenchman has faced criticism for much of the season, but his sumptuous volley against the Swans is perhaps a sign of things to come. Having had more touches than any other player involved, the Frenchman capped a decent performance with a strike reminiscent of his Serie A days.
Juan Mata – 6
By the Spaniard’s high standards, it was a relatively quiet match. He weighed in with a single shot at goal and one key pass, before having his afternoon cut short by the arrival of Jesse Lingard.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 8
The big Swede showed us the level of performance we grew accustomed to throughout the opening few weeks of the season. Zlatan appeared back to his best, with two very well taken goals and an all-round impressive display as the Red Devils’ lone striker.
Jesse Lingard – 5
Having replaced Juan Mata with ten minutes remaining, there was very little Lingard could do, but assist his team-mates in closing out the remainder of the match.
Morgan Schneiderlin – N/A
Timothy Fosu-Mensah – N/A
