How Manchester United's players rated in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal

Manchester United were much improved against Arsenal and were unlucky not to take the three points. Jose Mourinho is beginning to know his best side and the decision to move to a 4-3-3 looks to be an inspired one. It suits the players in the squad, providing Paul Pogba with a free role that should benefit the side in the long run. The late equaliser was harsh on the home side, but they should be able to build on this performance. If they can play like this on a consistent basis, they will be challenging for a top four spot this season. Here is how their players rated on Saturday.

David de Gea – The Spaniard wasn’t called into much action on Saturday as Arsenal’s attack underperformed. He will be disappointed by his failure to keep a clean sheet, but there was little he could do for the equaliser. 6

Antonio Valencia – Sky Sports awarded him the man-of-the-match award, which shows how good he was on Saturday. He contributed in both halves of the pitch and Manchester United supporters will be happy with how he has developed since the appointment of Jose Mourinho. 7

Phil Jones – The Englishman has done well since returning to the side and it could finally be his time to establish himself as a key part of the Manchester United defence. He dealt with Alexis Sanchez well, but will be disappointed with his contribution for Olivier Giroud’s goal. 6

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Marcos Rojo – He has been much maligned during his time at Old Trafford, but Rojo played very well against Arsenal. The defender completed four tackles showing his quality defensively. He almost added a second at the other end, which would have been the perfect way to cap off a good performance. 7

Matteo Darmian – The Italian looked uncomfortable at left back and is unlikely to become a regular in that position. He was often caught out of position and gave away a few stupid fouls in the first half. Darmian was certainly the weak link of the United back four and I’d expect Daley Blind to come into the side next weekend. 5

Ander Herrera – After making his Spain debut in the week, Herrera delivered a good performance in the Manchester United midfield. His passing was accurate and his driving runs from midfield provided the attack with good support, which was evident with his assist for the opening goal. 8

Michael Carrick – He didn’t make any headlines on Saturday, but the team look a lot better with him in the team. A lot of the work that he does goes unnoticed and United will be hoping that he can keep fit for the rest of the season. 6

Paul Pogba – The Frenchman was played in a role that suits him a lot more as Mourinho moved to a three man midfield, but Pogba didn’t influence the match as he would have liked. Although his passing was crisp and he linked up play well, he will be disappointed by his contribution. 5

Juan Mata – Despite people thinking that he would be surplus to requirements this season, Mata is establishing himself as an important part of this Manchester United side. He scored the only goal of the game, as he arrived late into the box and finished well past Petr Cech. It was a solid performance from Mata, who never fails to give less than 100%. 8

Marcos Rashford –Although he didn’t manage to score two goals like he did in the fixture last season, Rashford was very impressive in possession. He glides past defenders with ease, making him one of the more difficult players to dispossess in the league. His performance was stained by how easily he was beaten by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the build-up to Arsenal’s equaliser. 6

Anthony Martial – The Frenchman hasn’t been given as many opportunities as last season and there was a degree of rustiness in his performance. He played for just over 60 minutes and looked bright, but his end product wasn’t at the level that it needed to be at. 5

Wayne Rooney – He didn’t contribute a lot when he came on and it is evident why he isn’t in the team at the moment. 5

Daley Blind – The Dutchman was solid after being subbed on and should be pushing for a place in the starting eleven next weekend. 6

Morgan Schneiderlin – He wasn’t on the pitch long enough to make a significant contribution. N/A
