Manchester United’s 19 match unbeaten run in the Premier League was preserved in dramatic fashion as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s last-gasp penalty earnt a late draw against Everton on Tuesday night.
Without a loss since the 4-0 humiliation at Stamford Bridge back in October, Jagielka held off the challenge of Marcos Rojo to put a deft finish through David de Gea’s legs and put the visitors ahead.
It was to be a similar story for Jose Mourinho’s side from that point, dominating possession without any reward, with Paul Pogba hitting the crossbar on his return with Joel Robles rooted to the spot.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic thought he had equalised only for the linesman to controversially rule it out for offside, but Ashley Williams’ late handball gifted the Swede a chance at redemption from the spot.
United’s late show means that they remain in fifth in the table after their ninth home draw of the season, missing out on the chance to close the gap on Manchester City ahead of their clash with Chelsea.
See below for how The Boot Room assessed another Old Trafford disappointment for United…
David de Gea – Will be question marks over his decision to not come and claim the ball for Jagielka’s goal, instead staying back and unable to stop the ball creeping between his legs. Often guilty of a lack of communication with his defence too; not his finest evening in a Manchester United shirt. 5.
Marcos Rojo – Failed to compete with the strength of Jagielka and deal with the flick-on that led to Everton’s opener and nearly let in Lukaku late on to seal the win after a breakdown of communication with De Gea. Far from the finished article in the centre of defence at Old Trafford. 6.
Eric Bailly – Looked more than up for the physical battle with Lukaku from the word go, stifling the Belgian to a few blocked shots from distance for the majority of the game. Can’t help but feel that if he was the man marking Jagielka during the first-half then Everton wouldn’t have had an opener. 7.
Ashley Young – Moved onto the right-hand side by Mourinho in the absence of Valencia and offered a threat in attack. Put a teasing ball across the six-yard box that narrowly evaded Rashford at the back post and was solid with his set-piece delivery, picking Pogba out to hit the woodwork. 7.
Daley Blind – Nearly drew his side level straight away with a well-placed free-kick only to be denied by a superb Robles stop. Didn’t have much to do defensively before being withdrawn at half-time. 6.
Marouane Fellaini – Really struggled to impose himself at Old Trafford against his former side, unable to lift the tempo in midfield as United pushed to get back into the match. Being beaten in the air by Holgate twice in succession summed up his evening – expect him to lose his spot to Pogba for the next match. 4.
Michael Carrick – Was his natural composed self at the heart of the midfield and limited Everton to only a few counter-attacks. Made way for a more attacking option as the hosts pushed late on. 6.
Ander Herrera – Restored to the United side following suspension and was inches away from his first Premier League goal of the season, seeing his effort crash off the woodwork before Robles’ fingertip save. Stood out in the first-half but was bizarrely moved to right-back to accommodate Pogba. 7.
Jesse Lingard – Was far too deep in the first-half, dropping back to support Young too often when he would have been better off as an option further up the field. Flashed a shot well wide from outside the area but aside from that he rarely had an impact in and around the Everton penalty area. 5.
Marcus Rashford – Much more room for the youngster to utilise in behind an Everton defence that pushed higher up the pitch, exploiting Holgate time after time on the wing. Looked the brightest spark in another tepid United attacking performance but needs to break his goal-scoring drought for his own good. 7.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Denied inside the first five minutes on his return by a desperate block from Williams. Generally not clinical enough on the night despite having a goal chalked off – wrongly – for offside, but made up for it by keeping his cool from the spot to clinch a dramatic equaliser. 6.
Paul Pogba – Came on at half-time with United crying out for someone to add some creativity to their play and nearly made an instant impact, crashing a header off of the crossbar. Such has been the story of his season to date, he couldn’t find the all-important final touch in the penalty area. 6.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Dropped to the bench after struggling against West Brom, he was given a run out for the final half hour but again failed to impress. Had more than one occasion where a shot would have been the best option but he instead opted to try one pass too many. Wasteful. 4.
Luke Shaw – Despite Mourinho’s cutting comments on Monday, the 21-year-old was given half an hour to prove him wrong and made an excellent goal-line clearance with Lukaku sniffing. Was in the right position to fire a right-footed shot goal-bound for Williams to palm away, earning United a late penalty. 6.
