Without many of their main men with Paul Pogba sidelined through injury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, a trip to strugglers Middlesbrough certainly made life easier for the Red Devils. Fresh from the sacking of Aitor Karanka, the north-east club did not make life easy for Jose Mourinho and co., but they moved up to fifth for the first time since October with a win through a headed effort from Marouane Fellaini and a fine striker from Jesse Lingard. Rudy Gestede’s late consolation effort gave the home side hope, but Antonio Valencia capitalised to ensure that United emerged victorious.
