Arriving in France for the second leg with a three-goal lead from last week’s fixture at Old Trafford, United increased their advantage early on when Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s deft flick found the far corner.

For all their efforts, Saint Etienne struggled to test Sergio Romero’s goal and were fortunate that wasteful final-third play at the other end didn’t extend United’s unassailable advantage.

Eric Bailly received two yellow cards in 185 seconds to put a blemish on an otherwise successful evening for Jose Mourinho’s side, meaning he will miss the first-leg of United’s next European tie.
