Emre Can – Really struggled to impose himself against a Southampton side that weren’t just going to sit back and absorb Liverpool’s attacks, and was very sloppy with his passing. Nearly got on the score-sheet but for Forster’s unbelievable save, but all in all it just wasn’t his day. 6.
Jordan Henderson – Overrun at times on the counter-attack during a testing first-half, but was more dominant after the break. Kept things ticking at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield, distributing the ball left and right as he launched attack after attack – will be a vital player against Chelsea. 8.
Adam Lallana – Really found it hard to make an impression against his former-side on Wednesday evening, not being as cutting-edge as usual. Made the odd decent run in behind, but with Southampton defending so deeply as the match went on it became impossible to find space. 6.
Roberto Firmino – Found himself unable to make an impact during a tight first-half against a disciplined Southampton defence, but as Liverpool pushed he was allowed far more time out wide as the Saints sat back. Very dangerous once he moved to the right-wing, putting in teasing crosses into the box. Southampton’s strength-in-numbers affected his natural fluidity in the final third, though. 7.
Philippe Coutinho – On a day that should have been celebratory for the Brazilian after signing a new big-money deal at Anfield, he struggled to find his usual attacking rhythm. Feinted inside onto his infamous right-foot on more than one occasion just outside of the 18-yard-box but couldn’t find the target this time. Still needs more game-time to recover fully from his injury. 6.
