Trent Alexander-Arnold – Had a difficult time against Redmond in the first-half, unable to cope with his turn of pace and tricky acceleration. Found himself lacking composure in the final third when he joined Liverpool’s attacks, squandering numerous promising positions, but he looks like he could be part of the future at Anfield if he can get over his early-career nerves. 6.
Joel Matip – After all of the recent furore over his place in the Liverpool side during the Africa Cup of Nations, his return wasn’t what Klopp would have wanted. Seemed off the pace as Southampton found gaps early on, and lacked the pace to keep up with Sims leading to Long’s goal. 6.
Dejan Lovren – Very unconfident first-half performance, with mistimed headers and slack clearances leading to Southampton’s chances, but made up for this as the game went on. Barely had much to deal with during the second-half, but will have to improve for the upcoming Chelsea test. 6.
James Milner – After a testing opening quarter against the pace and guile of Redmond, he acted as a left-winger as Liverpool attacked. Twice he put in delightful crosses into the area, cutting inside onto his favoured right-foot, and was unfortunate not to see an end product from them. 8.
