Liverpool managed to continue their impressive form in the Merseyside derby with a 3-1 win over Everton at Anfield. They were the better team from start to finish and scored three excellent goals. Their individuals stepped up this afternoon and the rest of the team worked hard to provide a platform for them. They have put themselves in a dominant position in the race for Champions League football and should take a lot of confidence into the run-in. Here are how their players rated on Saturday:
Simon Mignolet – There was little he could do for the goal and his handling was good throughout the game. He made a decent save to stop Everton getting back into the game in the second half. 6
Nathaniel Clyne – He started slowly with some poor passes, but he grew into the game and offered good support down the right wing. It was a solid full back performance from the England international. 6
Joel Matip – The centre back was impressive this afternoon and coped well with the physicality of Romelu Lukaku. In possession, Matip was important to launching attacks with his positive passing from the back. 7
Dejan Lovren – The Croatian dominated in the air and made a couple of good tackles to break down Everton attacks. He wasn’t as good in possession as Matip, but he knows his limitations and can be pleased with his performance. 7
James Milner – He struggled at times in defence and was obviously targeted by Everton. It wasn’t his best performance in possession either. This is a position that Liverpool must strengthen in the summer. 5
Emre Can – Although the German got booked, he competed well in midfield areas and provided some bite which is needed in a derby game. His passing was inconsistent, but he did play a couple of dangerous balls that caused problems for the Everton defence. 6
Lucas Leiva – The Brazilian isn’t a regular in the centre of midfield, but he delivered a good performance at Anfield. He knows his limitations in possession and provided cover to the back four. Although he lacks the passing ability and energy of Jordan Henderson, he did well covering for the club captain. 6
Gini Wijnaldum – It was a slightly different role for Wijnaldum this afternoon as he didn’t get forward as much as he has in recent weeks. However, he pressed well and helped his side dominate the midfield areas. 7
Sadio Mane – The attacker was the difference between the two teams in the first meeting and he was excellent once again on Saturday. His pace and dynamism caused problems for the entire first-half. He scored the first goal with an impressive driving run and clever finish. 8
Roberto Firmino – It will be the other three attackers that take the headlines, but Firmino worked hard and it was his movement that provided space for his team-mates to score. He registered the assist for the first goal and played his part in another derby win. 7
Philippe Coutinho – The Brazilian was excellent this afternoon, getting a goal and an assist. His goal was an incredible display of individual skill as he picked up the ball and beat two players before firing into the top corner. The attacker’s runs caused havoc all afternoon and he will be key during the run-in. 9
Divock Origi – The Belgian had an immediate impact on the game as he scored just minutes after coming on. It was good movement from the striker to get into position to score and he made no mistake with the finish. He played his part after coming on. 7
Trent Alexander-Arnold – He impressed in his second half substitute performance as he was positive in his movement and got a couple of shots in on goal. 6
Ragnar Klavan – The defender was only on for a few minutes and can’t be rated on his performance. N/A
