How Jamal Musiala’s horror injury inadvertently helped Harry Kane become the best player in the world

It’s getting harder and harder to argue against the fact that Harry Kane might just be the best player in the world right now, and this impressive form all started back in pre-season.

The Bayern Munich star added another goal to his phenomenal tally for the season last night in a 4-0 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League.

That’s now 20 goals in 12 games this season for Harry Kane, which is frankly absurd. Kane himself believes he is in the form of his life, and he’s absolutely right.

There’s talk of Kane being the best player in the world at the moment, and murmurs of him finally landing the Ballon d’Or in 2026. But, this recent surge in form all stems from one decisive moment for Jamal Musiala at the Club World Cup this summer.

Vincent Kompany’s tweak on Harry Kane’s game worked wonders

We will all remember Musiala suffered a broken fibula and a dislocated ankle during that tournament after colliding with then-PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

With the young playmaker out for months, Bayern boss Vincent Kompany was faced with a dilemma: try and sign a new number 10 or work with what he had at his disposal already.

Thankfully for Kompany, when you have Harry Kane in your squad, the solution is simple. We’ve all seen Kane dropping deeper for Spurs and for England, and many have been frustrated to see the centre-forward doing this. But, clearly, giving the striker the licence to roam is a surefire method for success.

Poll: Who is the best player in the world right now?

A player as talented and versatile as Kane does not need limitations or instructions; just let him play and the rest will follow. You only have to look at his outstanding display in Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund last week to see the impact he can have across all areas of the pitch.

Kane’s goalscoring record this season is almost unfathomable, but his work rate, ‘frightening’ passing range, vision, footballing intelligence, and physicality are now coming to the fore in this new role.

He has previously said he would ‘love’ to win the Ballon d’Or and stated doing so would turn 2025/26 into the perfect season for him. If he can lead Bayern to Champions League glory this term, that prestigious prize could finally be his.

German legends are raving about Harry Kane

This season, Kane has well and truly taken his game to another level. He reached 100 goals for Bayern earlier this season, becoming the fastest player this century to do so for a club in Europe’s top five leagues.

Indeed, there is no player in Europe who has scored more than the England captain since the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Kane’s form has had pundits and legends of the game drooling. Lothar Matthaus told Sky Germany: “Kane has reinvented the centre-forward game, as Manuel Neuer did with goalkeepers about a decade and a half ago.

“I don’t see a better striker in the world right now. Not just because of his goals, but because of his versatility and the positions he plays.

“Kane also demonstrates qualities as a passer, dribbler, and tackler. He is simultaneously a goalscorer, playmaker, box-to-box player, and tackler.”

Kane’s former teammate, Kingsley Coman told Rio Ferdinand how much he loved playing with the Englishman, saying: “Harry makes you better – he is not here just to finish, he will put you in front of the goal.

“People say if your striker is selfish then there is a problem. But Harry is not selfish and he bangs in 40 goals or more a season.”

Meanwhile, Raphael Honigstein suggested Kane is essentially playing four different roles every game for Bayern. When a player is this good at playing those different roles, why not let him?
