At the end of the 2013- 2014 campaign, Pochettino trimmed down the squad quite a lot, selling or releasing almost 21 players and bringing in only seven. The focus of the purchases was on youth and Premier League experience. It was apparent he wanted to bring in top flight veterans to complement the existing flair within the squad. Looking through the list of transfers, it is apparent he considered the defense to be a major problem, which led him to buy Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Frederico Fazio, while Benjamin Stambouli was bought to beef up the midfield.
In the 2014-2015 season, Spurs struggled to hold on to leads. Several combinations were tried in the centre of midfield and defence, with none seemingly working. Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb eventually formed Spurs best midfield partnership for the year. It led them to a fifth place finish and the runners up position in the League cup after losing a tightly contested final to winners Chelsea.
The season represented a significant improvement on the previous one, not only in league position but also the style of play. Irrespective of the improvement, Pochettino was not completely satisfied with his defense. Spurs had a goal difference of just +5 at the end of the season having conceded 53 goals. To remedy it, the excellent Toby Alderweireld was made a priority and the slightly disappointing Vlad Chiriches was shipped out to Napoli. The attack was also supplemented with the additions of Clinton N’jie and Heung-min Son. Although during the window it seemed as if the North London outfit had left themselves short, Pochettino made great use of the youth academy and other purchases to complement the squad.
