The picture above gives an idea about the enormity of the task established by Pochettino. A look through the spurs squad from 2013-14 makes for grim reading. The defence; although with the experience of Michael Dawson, looks like it’s been put together in haste. The midfield; bar Christian Eriksen, lacked an effective creative outlet. The several midfield purchases in the aftermath of selling Bale and Modric were severely underperforming, which led to them conceding some entirely avoidable and soft goals.

Comparing this squad with the one in 2014-2015 gives a bit more insight into Pochettino’s thinking.
