Barcelona legend Carles Puyol took to Twitter with a message describing football as “beautiful” after Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Reds, last season’s Champions League winners, hosted Atletico Madrid at Anfield, hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in the Spanish capital.

Things looked to be according to plan as Georginio Wijnaldum’s header close to half time levelled the tie, and with no goals in the second half, the game went to extra time.

Liverpool then struck early after the restart, Roberto Firmino scoring in the 94th minute, but then things went horribly wrong for the Reds.

Substitute Marcos Llorente made the most of a poor Adrian clearance on 97 minutes to stun the home crowd and then added a second to leave Liverpool needing two goals to progress.

With time running out, Klopp’s charges could not strike back and the result of the tie was put beyond all doubt through Alvaro Morata.

Puyol, whose beloved Barca contested two enthralling semi-final games with Liverpool last season, posted the following message at the end of the game, which translates to “how beautiful is football, incredible”.

Liverpool have endured a poor run of form over the past few weeks and are now out of all three cup competitions but the silverware that matters most, the Premier League title, is within reach.

Up next for the Reds is the Merseyside derby as they head to Goodison Park to lock horns with Everton in the Premier League on Monday night.
