‘How bad?’: Rangers fans destroy defender Gareth McAuley after losing to Kilmarnock

Gareth McAuley was recalled to the team for the defeat to Kilmarnock on Wednesday night – and some Rangers fans on Twitter crushed him for the quality of his performance.

The 39-year-old defender came into the team for the Scottish Premiership fixture and was well off the pace in the loss.

Steven Gerrard’s side ended 2018 on a high by beating Old Firm rivals Celtic to get themselves in the title conversation, but it was the worst start after the winter break with a defeat on the road.

The Light Blues were on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline despite the fact that January loan signing Jermain Defoe netted first.

Kilmarnock moved ahead of Rangers in the league table to second with their win and just a point behind leaders Celtic, while Gerrard’s team are three points adrift.

A selection of Rangers fans singled out McAuley for criticism after his display in the game.

The veteran centre-back didn’t get close enough to Jordan Jones for his winning goal, which is quite the story considering he will complete a move to Ibrox in the summer.

McAuley was thrown into the XI due to Connor Goldson’s absence and partnered Joe Worrall in defence, who was robbed of possession as the last man to gift Kilmarnock an equaliser at the time.

McAuley’s lack of pace and mobility was exposed on Wednesday night, which is why he should be emergency cover for the rest of the campaign.
