How Arsenal rated in their heavy Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich

Francis Coquelin – Continued his poor performance from last Saturday against Hull, allowing Robben acres of space to cut inside and score. Struggled to maintain a high tempo and press the Bayern midfield, and failed to make a single tackle in the 75 minutes he was on the pitch. Woeful. 4.

Granit Xhaka – Returned to the side but found it hard to keep track of Bayern’s dominant midfield at times. Had a chance to put Arsenal ahead but he thumped his shot straight at Neuer, and his poor discipline surfaced again with a second-half yellow. Was weak in the tackle as Bayern coasted to victory, and his match was summed up when it was his touch that deflected a fourth past Ospina. 4.

Mesut Ozil – Had a poor free-kick saved from an excellent position as Arsenal looked for an equaliser, setting up yet another anonymous game for the German. Travelled well on the ball twice, shooting straight at Neuer on one occasion, but once again didn’t prove himself in a big game. 4.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Moved back to an attacking midfield position and showed good intent in the first-half. Showed great vision to pick out Xhaka, and he ran tirelessly all night, but he gifted Bayern a tie-clinching fifth with an awful pass at the back. 6.

Alex Iwobi – May as well not have been on the pitch at times on Wednesday night, failing to give Gibbs adequate defensive cover and offering very little against a stubborn Bayern defence. Not a surprise that he was substituted just after the hour-mark. 3.
