Bayern Munich put one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after comprehensively seeing off Arsenal in a thrilling second-half performance at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
After being knocked out at the last-16 stage by their German opponents twice in the past four years, Arjen Robben’s superb early strike set Bayern on their way to making it three in five years.
Despite the hosts’ dominance in possession, Arsenal levelled the tie and secured an away goal when Alexis Sanchez turned and fired home after his initial spot-kick was easily saved by Manuel Neuer.
This was as good as it got for the visitor’s though, as after Lauren Koscielny was forced off with a hamstring injury Bayern scored three times in ten minutes to earn themselves a commanding lead.
A Robert Lewandowski header, followed by a quick-fire double for Thiago Alcantara, put the game to bed before Thomas Muller added a fifth to all-but seal Bayern’s spot in the quarter-finals.
