Aaron Ramsey – Returned in place of the struggling Coquelin and immediately provided reliable defensive cover and more discipline and shape to Arsenal’s side. Showed a passion and a desire that’s been missing in the midfield in his absence, leading by example in the middle of the park. All fell apart when he went off. 8.

Granit Xhaka – Looked much more assured alongside Ramsey, following his lead and getting stuck in Bayern with a few crunching challenges. Pressed high and turned possession over, but undid his good early work and completely fell apart in the second-half massacre. 6.

Theo Walcott – Used his pace superbly all match, getting in behind Bayern’s defence regularly and making no mistake with a thumping finish past Neuer to give his side a glimmer of hope. Was wrongly denied a penalty after quick work with his feet but his energy gave his side a huge lift. 8.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Looked lively and up for the challenge from the opening whistle, running at Bayern’s back-line with intent and pace. Found huge amounts of space between the opposition midfield and defence, showing great vision at times to thread passes into Walcott. Never gave up even after Koscielny had been shown a red card, displaying his passion for the club until the end. 8.

Alexis Sanchez – Returned to Arsenal’s starting line-up after being left out for Liverpool and held the ball up well in attack, using his quick feet efficiently. Struggled with his defensive duties, though, leaving Monreal exposed on the left-hand side whenever Bayern attacked and it was his weak challenge that allowed Robben to put the tie beyond doubt with the second. Not at his best. 5.
