Ten-man Arsenal exited the Champions League in embarrassing fashion after crashing to a 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium, securing a 10-2 aggregate loss in their last-16 tie.
Arsenal began the second leg on Tuesday with a four-goal deficit, yet played with intent and pace and took a deserved lead when Theo Walcott thumped past Manuel Neuer at the near post.
Yet the game completely turned on its head early in the second-half when Laurent Koscielny earnt himself a straight red card for pushing Robert Lewandowski inside the penalty area, with the Polish striker picking himself up to slot past David Ospina in the Arsenal goal to put the result of the tie beyond doubt.
The floodgates then opened for the visitors as firstly Arjen Robben, followed by a sublime curling strike from Douglas Costa and an Arturo Vidal brace, topped off a miserable European evening in London.
Arsenal’s exit means that it’s been seven years since they last reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, whilst Bayern move one step closer to reclaiming the title they last won back in 2013.
