A number of Arsenal fans have responded to Houssem Aouar’s latest Twitter message amid links between the Gunners and the Lyon ace which went on throughout the summer.

The 22-year-old was reported to have been one of Mikel Arteta’s top transfer targets over the summer, with ESPN claiming Arsenal were frontrunners for the £54m man’s signature.

However, the Gunners were unable to get their hands on Aouar before the transfer window shut, though they did manage to sign another of their main targets in Thomas Partey.

Despite Arsenal’s failure to sign the Lyon midfielder, there remains optimism amongst some supporters that a deal can be struck next year.

On Friday night, Aouar joined on the social media trend of posting an old picture of “how it started” and a newer picture of “how it’s going”.

So there’s the past, the present – and some Arsenal fans were kind enough to suggest the future:

Aouar made his France debut on Tuesday, starting in the 7-1 win over Ukraine.

After the game, the midfielder was asked about the Arsenal speculation and whether he was happy to be staying at Lyon.

“Of course I asked myself all the necessary questions,” he is quoted by Football London as saying.

“I am in the headspace to have a great season with my club and get back the points that we have lost.

“So of course we are going to try to do the best season and to try to put the team and the club back in its rightful place, at the top of France.

“Disappointed? I am the opposite. I am at home, in the club that I love, with my friends and my family.”
