‘Horrible to see’: Ian Wright rips into Arsenal player after Friday defeat – not Bernd Leno

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has criticised Dani Ceballos for how easily he went to ground to win a penalty in Friday night’s Premier League defeat to Everton.

The Gunners were in action at the Emirates Stadium in a game that was preceded by fan protests outside the ground calling for the club’s current owners to sell up.

During the match, the Gunners were given a penalty early in the second half when Ceballos went down in the box under a challenge from Richarlison.

However, the decision was reversed after a check by VAR showed that Nicolas Pepe was offside, and Arsenal went on to lose 1-0 due to a Bernd Leno own goal in the 76th minute.

Mikel Arteta was raging after the game, saying he’d “had enough” of VAR following the system’s latest moment of controversy.

But while Wright was also unhappy with VAR’s role in overturning the penalty, he was also not impressed with Ceballos and how he won it in the first place.

“For me it wasn’t a penalty,” Wright told Optus Sport. “It’s not something I like to see. Ceballos is [often] guilty of this kind of thing.

“There’s nowhere near enough contact for him to go down the way he goes down. It’s horrible to see, It’s nothing.”

Regarding the offside call, Wright added: “These little lines, it’s too close. If they’ve got to draw other lines, dotted lines, it’s at least level.

“Come on man. How are they working that out? It almost feels like they’re making it up. They can literally say anything they’ve got the line that close.”

TBR View:

Admittedly, Ceballos did go to ground easily, but had Arsenal been given the penalty, scored it, and gone on to win, you wouldn’t have had fans complaining.

As it was, VAR ends up delivering another controversial verdict that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, and leads to making a bad week for Gunners supporters even worse.
