Erik ten Hag is just one of the many names to have been linked with the Tottenham Hotspur job, with Football London reporting that he is on the club’s radar as they search for Jose Mourinho’s successor.

Ten Hag has done a superb job with Ajax. His side are virtually assured of winning the Eredivisie title back this year.

And of course, his most notable achievement amongst Spurs fans may well be taking Ajax to the Champions League semi-final in 2019.

So it would be an incredibly excitement move to bring the 51-year-old to North London in the coming months.

And there may well be one key member of the Tottenham side who would be delighted to see ten Hag come in.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has largely enjoyed a superb first year with Spurs. After Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, he has arguably been Tottenham’s best player this season.

‘We were really close’

But it appears that his success will have come as no surprise to ten Hag – based on comments he made about the Dane at the start of the year.

The Ajax boss told Voetbal International in January that Hojbjerg – who played under him with Bayern Munich II – had come incredibly close to joining his side before Tottenham made their move.

“I really wanted him to be there,” he told Voetbal International. “We were really close to that, “We have spoken to him several times. That boy really made our team stronger.

“Financially we would have made it out, I think. He could also go to other clubs, but wanted to come to Ajax. But then Tottenham came before him and we still got the short straw.”

Spurs fans have seen just how good Hojbjerg can be this season. So appointing a manager who is clearly a big fan of the 25-year-old will only be beneficial.

Of course, that is not the only factor Daniel Levy will consider. But with Tottenham potentially working with a tight budget this summer, he will surely want a boss who sees potential in what he already has available to him.
