Hojbjerg claims Harry Kane has quality to be the best in the world

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has claimed that Harry Kane has the quality to be the best player in the world, telling Match of the Day (broadcast on BBC One; 26/12; 23:25) that the biggest mistake anyone in football can make is to write off the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

Kane had plenty of eyes on him heading into the Boxing Day fixtures. Of course, he was previously last seen on a football pitch being consoled after England’s World Cup exit at the hands of France.

Kane had to deal with some childish chants from sections of the Brentford supporters. However, he would have expected such criticism after missing the penalty which would have likely taken England’s quarter-final into extra-time.

And it appeared that it was going to be a miserable return to action for Kane. Brentford took a 2-0 lead at one stage of the second-half. However, it was Kane who sparked the Spurs fightback.

Kane produced an absolutely brilliant header to make the score 2-1. Hojbjerg went on to equalise. And after the game, the Dane was asked about his teammate.

He suggested that anyone who questioned Kane after the World Cup needed to be ready to eat their words.

“I think the biggest mistake you can do in football is to doubt Harry Kane because he’s a machine at scoring goals, stepping up time and again, time and again,” he told Match of the Day.

“This guy has the quality to be number one in the world. Now the step for Harry, for the team, is to do the big things. And to do that, there’s work to do. But we have to start putting our minds to it.”

Kane was never going to let the disappointment of the World Cup knock him back. In fact, you can imagine that it inspired the forward to come back sooner for Spurs.

And he has picked up where he left off in the Premier League. The 29-year-old now has 13 goals in 16 games in the Premier League. Only the freakish form of Erling Haaland has been better so far.

If Kane can stay fit for the entire campaign, there is a chance that he could enjoy his best campaign yet in front of goal in the top-flight.

And given what he has already achieved, that is a frightening thought.
