Newcastle brought Allan Saint-Maximin to the club during the summer as Mike Ashley belatedly invested in some creative talent.
Steve Bruce warned the winger over his work-rate during pre-season (as per the Chronicle) amid talk he was something of a maverick at former club Nice.
But how’s he getting on? The second international break of the season provides the ideal time to take a closer look…
What’s the background?
BBC reported at the time that Saint-Maximin moved to the north east on a £16.5 million deal from the Ligue 1 outfit.
There was perhaps a feeling Ashley had simply spotted a financial opportunity; the chance to sign a promising 22-year-old winger relatively cheaply without considering how he would fit into the side or his potential attitude problems.
How’s he looked?
Injury problems have limited the winger to just one start, in the weekend 1-0 victory over Manchester United. He was the man getting the home fans off their seats and terrifying the visiting backline.
He hasn’t scored yet and perhaps there’s a suspicion he’s a player with dancing feet and an unpredictable approach but one who may not be able to translate that into goals and assists.
But for a club who have been quite one-paced in recent seasons, he may well provide a tonic and something to get excited about.
Even though injuries have held him back, Saint-Maximin has to be viewed as a hit as he has already grabbed the imagination of the fans.
Steve Bruce has to get more out of his squad from an attacking point of view and the winger looks better placed than Joelinton to offer it at this moment in time.
