A lot was made of Arsenal’s decision to sign David Raya and replace Aaron Ramsdale in the summer months.
The Spanish stopper arrived from Brentford and his form has been a nigh on constant topic of conversation among certain pundits. Some have questioned Mikel Arteta’s decision to bring Raya in for Ramsdale, while some have suggested it’s just what the best managers do.
Of course, Arteta didn’t help himself either. The Arsenal boss consistently said he didn’t have a number one but over time, it’s become clear that Raya is the guy.
However, answering a question from Tim Sherwood on if Raya was an upgrade on Ramsdale, Ian Wright has said that ultimately, the numbers prove it.

David Raya stats show he’s an upgrade on Aaron Ramsdale
Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show this weekend, the former Gunner admitted that Raya’s signing now looks an astute one.
“Well you say is he an upgrade but if you look at, you look at his his numbers, yeah. His numbers are better you know. You can’t argue with that Arsenal seem to attack more with him, he’s collecting more balls in the air stuff like that which is the margins I suppose that Mikel was going for it seems,” Wright said.
Money well spent in the end
Arsenal paid £30m for avid Raya and after spending similar on Aaron Ramsdale, it looked like being a risky decision from the Gunners.
However, as Wright points out here, you have to say that it now looks like being a shrewd decision by Mikel Arteta and the club.
Raya has the odd error in him like all keepers but Arteta signed him to help Arsenal play from the back and start attacks quicker and that has happened.
Right now, it looks a brilliant piece of business and one that could, ultimately, lead them to the title.
