Heung-min Son’s comments highlight ultimately pointless international endeavour

Tottenham’s South Korean star struggled after a long year for club and country.

Tottenham Hotspur’s season could be on the verge of implosion. Mauricio Pochettino’s men were beaten in both the League Cup and FA Cup this week. The Premier League looks out of reach and Borussia Dortmund will be a huge task in the Champions League.

The injuries to Dele Alli and Harry Kane have not helped. But either has the absence of Heung-min Son. He has been playing for South Korea at the Asian Cup and, with all due respect, that now looks a pointless endeavour.

His nation was dumped out by Qatar in the quarter-finals. South Korea failed to find any real form at the competition, only scraping through against Bahrain in the last round.

Son simply did not need to be at the competition. He had already given enough for his nation. He led the line at the World Cup, he helped his country to Asian Games gold after that.

“I wasn’t fully prepared.

“I felt physically empty. I feel so sorry to have let down my team-mates, coaches and the fans.”

The Tottenham star deserved to be allowed to focus on his club career. Instead, his energy levels have now been sapped by heading to the United Arab Emirates for the tournament.

Son should never have gone to the competition. It is a testament to the player that he will give his all for his nation but it has now been proven a pointless trip.

If he recovers his form for Tottenham in the remainder of this season it would be fairly miraculous.
