Heung-min Son has issued his verdict on the performance of Timo Werner as the Tottenham Hotspur loanee scored his first goal for the club in their win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Spurs picked up an important win in their battle to make the top four in the Premier League. Ange Postecoglou’s men went behind just before the hour-mark. But they fought back to secure the three points.

Timo Werner equalised with 13 minutes remaining. It was the German’s first goal for the club following his arrival on loan during the January transfer window.

Heung-min Son lauds Timo Werner after first Tottenham goal

Werner has provided a couple of assists since arriving. But he had not yet scored for the club. And with that, Werner had come in for a little bit of criticism since joining Spurs.

But speaking to Tottenham’s media team, Heung-min Son suggested that it should be the first goal of many for the 27-year-old.

“Yeah when you’re missing a big chance like that, you feel like the world is against me. But Timo stepped up fantastically. He didn’t give up and then he played fantastic for me. Everybody is very happy. I hope Timo enjoyed that goal. I think everybody’s happy for him,” he said.

“As I said before, Timo shouldn’t never celebrate this goal because the fans and the players are expecting more from him. I hope he continues to work hard and help the team.”

Spurs will hope goal proves to be the first of many

Tottenham were dealt another injury blow in the build-up to the Palace game with Richarlison being sidelined.

Werner was arguably the player that news presented the biggest opportunity to, with Son moving up front.

RB Leipzig think Tottenham are going to take up the option to sign Werner permanently. It is a low-risk move given that he will not cost a huge sum. And the Tottenham staff have been impressed by Werner’s attitude.

But Spurs now have so much depth in the final third that supporters would be forgiven for wanting more from Werner over the coming months.

Tottenham fans will therefore, hope that Werner’s equaliser on Saturday proves to be one of several during his time on loan.
