‘He’s scoring’; 19-year-old Ellis Simms hailed as natural goalscorer

Everton U23s Assistant John Ebbrell is full of praise for Ellis Simms. The 19-year-old is scoring goals effortlessly these days.

John Ebbrell certainly likes what he sees from Ellis Simms. The teenager started the U23 season with three goals in three games, carrying over decent form from last year.

And Ebbrel, the assistant manager for the side, sees a natural goalscorer in Simms.

“What I do know with Ellis, if he ends up one-vs-one with the goalkeeper, he’s scoring,” Ebbrell told the Liverpool Echo. “From experience, I know if you have time to think for that finish it can be difficult but Ellis is really calm and composed in those situations. He very rarely misses.”

Simms is getting to the age where fans will want to see what he can do in the senior side before long. His youth record, though, is very encouraging.

He joined Everton from Manchester City in 2017 and lit up the U18 league. Simms’ debut season with the Toffees may only have seen him score four times in 17 but he exploded the following campaign.

The forward bagged 32 goals in 21 games, adding another five in four in the Youth Cup. That, naturally, saw him step up to U23 level and he looked good once again. Simms scored eight times in 15 Premier League 2 games – and a 1-in-2 record is nothing to ignore.

The fact Simms has started this season well is only further encouragement. He’ll be 20 soon, though, and the time will come that he’ll have to step up once again if he’s to make it at Everton.

The teenager has met every challenge so far, though, so there’s reason to be excited.
