'He's pushing': Eddie Howe says 'outstanding' Newcastle 29-year-old has been absolutely brilliant in training

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was asked about new goalkeeper Loris Karius at his press conference before facing Bournemouth.

Karius signed for the Magpies after the transfer deadline had passed due to an injury suffered by Karl Darlow in training.

As per Newcastle’s official website, Howe said that Karius has impressed in training and is someone he would trust as a deputy to Nick Pope.

There is no prospect of him getting in ahead of the England man on form right now, but perhaps the former Liverpool stopper can play in the cup competitions.

Howe said: “The injury to Darlow was strange. Normal shot action and twisted his ankle. We decided it was wise to move for someone with experience.

“Loris was the outstanding candidate when we looked at the goalkeepers available. He’s at a very good age (29) and he’s had some incredible experiences in his career.

“He’s come in and trained very well. You don’t want to bring someone in who doesn’t want to play and who can’t play.

“So, he can do both. He’s pushing and training very well after a period where he hasn’t had that day to day contact with the team. He’s improved and got better with every training session we’ve had and been really good with the team.”

Karius has just come in to add cover to Howe’s side, and it remains to be seen if he is indeed chosen to feature in the EFL Cup before the turn of the year.

Even if Pope is the established number one already, it is important that he has quality around him pushing him to train as hard as he can.

And Howe is now covered in case of more injuries between the sticks, although nobody of a Magpies persuasion would want anything to rule Pope out on current form.
