‘He’s perfect’: Jose Mourinho comments on Spurs defender Joe Rodon

Jose Mourinho has insisted that Joe Rodon needs to do nothing more to get back into the Tottenham Hotspur side, suggesting that the Welshman is perfect – in comments reported by Football London.

Rodon has not featured for Spurs since the end of January. Interestingly, the 23-year-old has not been named in any of Mourinho’s last three squads in the Premier League.

His absence comes after a run in which Rodon started three games in a row in the top flight. But Mourinho insisted that he is making excellent progress – even if he is not playing.

“He has to do nothing,” he said, as reported by Football London, when asked what Rodon needs to do to get back into the side. “He works very hard, good professional. He has to do nothing. He cannot play in the Europa League so that makes his chances reduced, in relation to the other guys.

“Centre-back is a position where of course if he was in the Europa League he would have lots of chances to play in these 11 matches that we did.

“There’s nothing. He’s perfect, works very hard, young guy, wants to learn, very enthusiastic. He played already matches that represent a lot, he played important matches against some of the best teams. He has just to wait for his opportunities and to get it.”

TBR View: Rodon would have always expected spell out of the side at some stage

In fairness, Rodon would have surely known that he would likely have to bide his time following his switch from Swansea City last year.

He went into this season still awaiting the chance to make his Premier League debut. So, he would have expected to spend some time out of the team at various stages.

And it must be noted that Davinson Sanchez has been hugely impressive in the last handful of games. Meanwhile, Toby Alderweireld remains a key man in North London.

He cannot play in the Europa League. But with Tottenham still battling on three fronts this term, the chances will almost certainly come his way again soon.

And judging by Mourinho’s comments, the Spurs boss is confident that he will make the most of the opportunity when he does return.
