'He's not the best': Ray Parlour worries one Arsenal player will be torn apart by Tottenham

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has told talkSPORT of his fears regarding how Nuno Tavares may fare against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Gunners face Spurs next week in one of the most highly anticipated north London derbies in years.

Arsenal and Tottenham were meant to lock horns at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in January.

However, the Gunners got the game postponed amid multiple covid cases, preexisting injury concerns and Africa Cup of Nations absentees.

Since then, Arsenal and Spurs have both got themselves in contention for the final Champions League spot in the Premier League table.

Mikel Arteta’s charges are currently fourth in the table, with Antonio Conte’s side two points behind in fifth.

Arsenal are currently without Kieran Tierney, and Tavares has been covering for the Scot at left-back.

“He’s got to improve”

The 22-year-old joined Arsenal last summer for £7million, but his maiden season at the Emirates hasn’t been smooth sailing.

Tavares has shown glimpses of his quality in a number of games, such as against Leicester and Newcastle. He also scored against Manchester United.

However, Tavares has also struggled in other matches, in particular against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

And Parlour reckons Tottenham could end up having a field day against the Portugal Under-21 international

He told talkSPORT (6/5/22, 9:50am): “I worry about the full-back areas.

“Tierney is brilliant if he stays fit. He’s been injured quite often in an Arsenal shirt.

Defensively, he’s (Tavares) not the best if I’m being honest. He’s got to improve on that.

“He’s better in a three at the back, when he plays wing-back. But he’s vulnerable at left-back.

“And I’m sure Spurs will be saying; ‘Well OK, let’s play down the left-hand side and Tavares.’

“They might get a bit of joy down that side when they play them next Thursday.”
