Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager following Steven Gerrard’s move to Aston Villa and Fabrizio Romano has revealed the stance of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The 46-year-old spent three seasons in Glasgow back in the day and he knows what it means to be a part of Rangers. He played 28 games for the Scots, scored five goals and picked up an assist before leaving for Arsenal in 2001.
The Athletic revealed last night that van Bronckhorst is leading the race to replace Gerrard at Rangers and that claim has been backed by multiple outlets.
Fabrizio Romano has had his say on the managerial hunt now.
Romano: Giovanni van Bronckhorst is interested in the Rangers job
Finding a new manager in the middle of the season is never easy and Rangers are experiencing that difficulty now.
Romano has claimed that the Gers have a three-man shortlist prepared. He claims that the board will start official conversations with all three men this weekend, but he hasn’t disclosed the names of two of the three targets.
However, he has confirmed that van Bronckhorst is one of the options Rangers are currently looking at and the Dutchman, an ex-Rangers player himself, is keen to take charge of the club.
What will GvB bring to Glasgow?
Van Bronckhorst was a popular man during his time at Rangers. Many fans were irked when he decided to leave them for Arsenal in 2001, but his return will likely be welcomed by most supporters.
The Dutchman is a big fan of a flexible 4-3-3. He admitted in an interview once that it’s his favourite formation, but he has had success playing the 4-2-3-1 formation as well, especially at Feyenoord.
He once smashed Ajax 6-2 using a 4-1-4-1 system, which shows that he doesn’t just stick to one style of play. That makes his appointment a really exciting one for Rangers fans, but it’s still unclear if he’ll be the man they’ll go for.
