Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Takumi Minamino is in ‘exceptional shape’ now and has promised him more game time in the coming weeks and months.

The Japan international came off the bench against Arsenal at the weekend and scored with his first touch. His talent and skill are unquestionable, but consistency has been the 26-year-old’s biggest problem.

Minamino, however, looks ready to have an impact whenever called upon now. He is yet to start in the Premier League or in the Champions League, but as he showed at Anfield on Saturday, he can make a big difference as a substitute.

Klopp, in his press conference yesterday, was asked about Minamino and the Liverpool boss admitted that he’s really pleased with his versatile attacker.

Klopp: Minamino will get more game time

The German said, as per Liverpool’s official website: “He played for Japan in the last few games because he is in a great shape, that’s how it is. That helps always when you want to start football games for club and country.

“He’s in exceptional shape, we knew that and that’s why it’s important for us. I knew before the game that Taki is pretty much our first option for changing on five positions for the Arsenal game. That says a lot because he can play all these different positions.

“When he came on, it was just a wonderful moment, 40-odd seconds on the pitch and scoring the goal. From that moment on, you can see his confidence now, with how the confidence grew in the last few months and how good a player he is.

“I’m really pleased for him, really. He will get his minutes, definitely.”

Minamino has started just two games all season, both on the left wing in the League Cup. He has scored three goals in the competition so far and he is almost guaranteed to start in the next round against Leicester.

The Japan international could well get a start tonight as well. Liverpool take on Porto in the Champions League in a game of very little significance. Klopp is expected to make a number of changes, and after his brilliant cameo against Arsenal, Minamino deserves a chance.

It will be interesting to see where Minamino will play if he does start tonight. As Klopp claimed yesterday, he can play in about five different positions, but attacking midfield is arguably the best role for him.
