'He's headed to Arsenal': International manager says Gunners have sealed deal for 'great' player
United States manager Gregg Berhalter has revealed that Matt Turner is “headed to Arsenal”.
Reports over the past few days have claimed the 27-year-old will be Emirates-bound in the summer.
The Evening Standard reported on Friday that the Gunners have agreed a deal in principle over Turner.
Arsenal will pay MLS side New England Revolution around £5million up front, claimed the article.
The deal will reportedly also include some add-ons and a 10 per cent sell-on percentage of a future transfer fee.
Turner became first-choice at New England in 2018 and has been a mainstay in between the sticks ever since.
He has made 107 league, cup and playoff appearances for his club.
Turner was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 and was also the MVP of the MLS All-Star Game.
The 6ft 3in ace has enjoyed a similar rise at international level, making 14 appearances for the USMNT.
“He looked like a player that’s going to Arsenal”
Turner’s latest cap came on Thursday night, helping the United States beat El Salvador 1-0.
Speaking after the game, Berhalter praised his goalkeeper’s efforts and rise to prominence.
“Well first of all, I think it is just a great story,” the Standard quotes him as saying.
“I hope the public is aware of this ascent of Matt Turner – because it is an incredible story.
“He went to Fairfield College, undrafted out of college, and now he’s playing with the national team and he’s headed to Arsenal.
“It’s an amazing story and it’s all down to him, his work ethic, his belief in himself and his never-give-up attitude.
“It’s a great story and Matt is a great guy, a great teammate and we are lucky to have him.
“Tonight was an example where he did everything he had to do. He was calm in all situations.
“He wasn’t tested much but he was there when we needed him and he looked like a player that’s going to Arsenal, for sure.”
