‘He’s gonna be massive’, ‘huge future’: Some Spurs fans can’t wait to see 20-year-old in first team

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to praise Spurs loanee Oliver Skipp as he prepares to get ready for England Under-21 duty.

The 20-year-old believes there is “always the possibility” of stepping up at Spurs and England if he continues to put in great performances.

However, he says now is not the time to focus on his long-term future as he heads into this week’s U21 European Championship group stage.

Skipp is one of the brightest players to come through the Tottenham academy in recent years, and has been sensational on loan at Norwich this season.

Skipp has made 38 Championship appearances for the Canaries and has been a key player in their pursuit of a return to the Premier League, currently eight points clear at the top of the table.

Now, the midfielder will be in action for Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions as they face Switzerland, Portugal and Croatia in the space of six days starting Thursday.

Given how well Skipp has been doing and how both Spurs and England could do with more strength in depth in defensive midfield, there’s plenty of scope for him to step up for both Jose Mourinho and Gareth Southgate.

While Skipp is optimistic, he’s not giving it too much thought at this moment in time.

“There’s a clear pathway from the 21s into the first team,” he told football.london. “I feel like if I continue to put in the performances then there is always the possibility.

“But I need to finish this season strongly and then look forward after this tournament is finished. It’s not a topic for this season at this moment but hopefully in a few months time we can be talking about it.”

Skipp could very much have staked a claim for first-team football at Spurs last season, but given his lack of game time, he opted to move to Norwich for 2020-21 – a superb call as he has improved massively and continues to progress.

As things stand, he’d walk into the Tottenham first team, so it would be surprising if Mourinho didn’t make him a starter in front of the back four as soon as he’s back in North London.
