'He's definitely changed': Kieran Trippier says Newcastle United man has been completely transformed this season

Kieran Trippier has told Under The Cosh that Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been completely transformed this season.

The Magpies enjoyed a brilliant first-half to the season and head into the World Cup sitting third in the Premier League.

Howe’s men boast the joint-best defensive record in the league at the moment and have only conceded 11 goals in their opening 15 games.

But this wasn’t the case last season as Newcastle shipped 62 goals over the course of the campaign. And Trippier claims that Howe has changed his defensive approach this season.

Trippier says Howe has been transformed

The 31-year-old says Howe actually watched him train with his former side Atletico Madrid and has now completely transformed his defensive set-up at St James’ Park.

“I think no disrespect to Eddie Howe but we were winning 4-3, 3-2 every game, we were conceding a lot of goals,” Trippier told Under The Cosh

“I think his defensive unit and the way he sets his team up. He came to Madrid to watch us train while I was there for a time to see how different teams worked.

“He’s definitely changed in that sense and just everything about him, really. He’s an unbelievable manager.”

Newcastle’s early-season success has been built on the foundation of a solid backline.

The summer arrival of Sven Botman has certainly helped. But Howe has also moved Dan Burn to left-back, which is proving to be a masterstroke right now.

The Magpies boss is known for playing free-flowing football, with his teams usually being exciting to watch.

But it seems that Howe has been working on the defensive side of his coaching and it’s certainly paying off for Newcastle this season.

Trippier has also been solid at right-back, while providing a real threat going forward. The former Spurs man has clearly improved his defending after working under Diego Simeone.
