‘He's been so good’: David Moyes really impressed with West Ham player with two league appearances this season

West Ham United face Leicester City today in their final match before the Premier League stops for the World Cup.

Manager David Moyes addressed the press, via Football London, ahead of today’s home tie.

At the start of the season, this clash looked like it might decide who would potentially be challenging for a place in the top six.

However, whichever team loses at the London Stadium could find themselves spending Christmas in the bottom three.

It’s been a tough season for the Hammers domestically, having not been able to replicate last year’s fantastic form.

They were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties in midweek by Blackburn Rovers.

However, the West Ham manager was quick to praise one of the players involved that day.

Moyes admitted he’s been very impressed with goalkeeper Alphonse Areola this season.

The Frenchman will be off to the World Cup next week as one of Hugo Lloris’ back-ups.

It’s a just reward for a keeper, who despite only making two league appearances this season, has been brilliant in the Europa Conference League.

Moyes impressed with Areola

The Scot was speaking to Football London about how proud he was that Areola would be heading to Qatar.

“I think rightly so. I think he’s been so good this season in the European games,” Moyes said.

“If you look at last year, he’s been really, really good for us.

“With Lukasz (Fabianski) being 37 now and Lukasz is playing ever so well as well.

“But obviously we’ve got someone ready when we feel that moment comes.

“That’s why we signed Areola, we like him a lot and he’s certainly really, really difficult to beat in goal at times and we’re pleased with him.”

It’s surely only a matter of time before Areola becomes West Ham’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Fabianski has been fantastic for West Ham since joining from Swansea City, however, his age might be starting to show.

He’s only kept three clean sheets this season, and he’ll be disappointed with goals such as Andreas Pereira’s strike against Fulham.

Areola, meanwhile, has been brilliant in the Europa Conference League, with Moyes calling him ‘incredibly crucial’.

Flynn Downes has also said that Areola has been ‘unbelievable’ when he’s played, and he’s been unlucky not be involved more often this season.

Despite how impressed Moyes has been with Areola, he’s unlikely to be involved today.

However, he may have a second World Cup winners medal around his neck before his next appearance for the Hammers.
