‘He’s been atrocious’: Paul Merson thinks one Arsenal player is currently offering ‘nothing’

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been “atrocious” lately, according to Gunners legend and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

The 31-year-old has long been one of Arsenal’s standout players, with an impressive tally of 74 goals and 16 assists from 121 competitive games.

Aubameyang’s contract was the subject of much concern from fans over the summer, as it was scheduled to expire in the summer of 2021.

When the Gabon international penned a new three-year, £250,000-a-week deal in September, there was much rejoicing at the club.

However, Aubameyang’s form has since nosedived, with just one goal in his last eight Premier League games and a tally of four goals from 12 appearances this season.

In his Daily Star column, Merson spoke of how Arsenal’s main players haven’t been doing well this season, and can’t see the Gunners beating Spurs in the derby.

“I don’t see how my old club can beat Tottenham this weekend,” he said. “They are too predictable and getting nothing from their stars.

“Willian has not got going at all, and is having a real nightmare. And Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been atrocious. What does he bring to the party? Absolutely nothing at the moment.

“You need big performances from your big players when things aren’t going well. Arsenal aren’t getting that. That’s a dangerous thing.

“Has Aubameyang relaxed too much after signing his contract? Only he can answer that. But he’s not earning his money.”

Strong words from Merson but he’s not wide off the mark really – Aubameyang’s form has been disappointing this season and, as a result, Arsenal’s results have suffered.

That said, the service towards the captain hasn’t been great either, and he’s not one to feed off scraps, so there’s work that needs to be done in terms of supplying ammunition too.
